Webinar on role of UHF in development of horticulture and Forestry

A webinar on the topic ‘Development of Horticulture and Forestry in Himachal in the past 50 years- Role of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni’ was organized today by the university. The webinar was organized under the NAHEP Institutional Development Plan (IDP) as part of the Himachal Statehood celebrations.

Over 345 final year students of BSc (Hons) Horticulture, Forestry and Biotechnology from three colleges of the university attended the webinar. Dr. KK Raina, Principal Investigator IDP welcomed the students and gave them a brief background about the history of Himachal Pradesh. He also explained about the various initiatives undertaken by the university to improve the quality of education in the university.

The Guest speaker, Director of Research Dr. Ravinder Sharma, gave a detailed presentation on the history of the university and how it has ushered in the development of Horticulture and Forestry in the state. Dr. Sharma said that the flow of information and dissemination of technologies developed by the university had helped to raise the socio-economic status of the farmers of the state. He said the university had not only contributed through the development of human resources but the research and extension activities play an important part in realizing the goal of improving farmers’ income and the state’s economy.

He said that in the past 50 years the university has become a leading center of research and education in fruits, vegetables, flowers and forest tree species. He also laid stress on overcoming the challenges of climate change to achieve the desired results in future thrust areas of the university. Dr. Sharma urged the students to assume the role of university brand ambassadors and help in the dissemination of the latest farming techniques to the farming community. He also stressed on the need to adopt modern tools like robotics and AI etc. in agriculture to achieve success.
