Young Writers Engage with Literary Mentors at Shimla Workshop

Shimla, June 23– In a stimulating session held at the Brews & Books Café, young winners of the pan-India Short Story Writing Competition, 2024, engaged in an insightful workshop led by esteemed literary figures Dr. Usha Bande and Gupteshwar Upadhayay. Moderated by Vandana Bhagra, founder of Keekli Channel, the workshop delved into the nuances of storytelling, drawing on the mentors’ vast experience in literature and education.

Dr. Usha Bande, a distinguished academic and prolific author, shared her expertise garnered from nearly three decades as a professor of English at Government Girls College, Shimla. Her extensive repertoire includes over 18 books, notable among them being “A Box of Stolen Moments” and “Celebrating Life”. Co-author of the coffee table book “Forts and Palaces of Himachal Pradesh”, she has been recognized for her contributions to literature and education.

Gupteshwar Upadhayay, whose passion for writing was kindled during his tenure as an educator in Shimla, emphasized the importance of creative expression through his Hindi and English publications. With works like “Ek Chutki Bhool” and “A Handful of Oxygen”, Upadhayay’s literary journey reflects a deep connection to the cultural fabric of Himachal Pradesh.

The workshop addressed fundamental aspects of storytelling, including narrative structure, character development, and thematic integration. Participants gained insights into adapting cultural and mythological elements into narratives while preserving the essence of their stories. Practical advice on transforming essays into vibrant narratives enriched the discussion, highlighting the significance of character-driven plots and engaging dialogues.

Reflecting the curiosity of young minds, participants posed probing questions such as the role of language complexity in storytelling and the necessity of explaining nuanced phrases.
