Young Minds Engage in High-Stakes Slater Debates at Bishop Cotton School

Shimla, April 22: The prestigious Slater Debates commenced this week at Bishop Cotton School, bringing together students from leading institutions across the country for a series of intellectually stimulating exchanges.

The opening rounds witnessed intense competition, with participants debating a wide range of contemporary issues—from the cultural impact of reality television and ethics of fast fashion to questions surrounding mental health, education, and the nature of love. The students impressed with their clarity of thought, depth of research, and confident articulation.

In one of the key rounds, Tyndale Bisco secured a win over Lawrence School, Sanawar on the motion “Reality TV corrupts societal values,” with Jiyad being adjudged Best Speaker. BCS B emerged victorious against La Martiniere Girls in a debate on academic motivation, where Rushaan Kakkar earned Best Speaker honours.

Loretto School defeated St Thomas on mental health legislation in India, while YPS triumphed over St Luke’s in a debate comparing cyberbullying and physical bullying. Aarya Sood (Loretto) and Karanveer Singh (YPS) were named Best Speakers respectively.

On the issue of higher education funding, AVS outperformed Sherwood, with Khushi Todi recognised as Best Speaker. Wynberg Allen also registered a win against Sanawar on social media censorship, led by a strong performance from Gauri Malhotra.

Environmental concerns were also debated, with AHS defeating VHS on the motion advocating heavy taxation on fast fashion. Pritha was awarded Best Speaker for her impactful arguments.

One of the most engaging rounds saw BCS A overcome Mallinson Girls on the thought-provoking motion, “Love is a serious mental illness, not a beautiful emotion.” Despite the loss, Maliya of Mallinson Girls was adjudged Best Speaker for her compelling presentation.

Organisers highlighted that the Slater Debates aim not only to determine winners but also to nurture critical thinking, articulate expression, and informed perspectives among students. The competition will continue over the coming days, promising further engaging discussions and high-quality debate.
