Tomato Prices Surge in Shimla due to Crop Damage, Shortage Hits Local Market
2 min readShimla, July 02: Tomato prices have once again surged in the capital. Tomatoes are selling for up to 160 rupees in the local vegetable market, Lower Market Shimla. This year, tomatoes have broken all records in terms of price increase. The heavy rainfall has severely damaged the tomato crop this year. Punjab and Haryana have been the most affected regions, leading to the suspension of tomato supply from these areas to the market.
Most of the tomato supply in the Shimla local market used to come from the plains. However, due to waterlogging, the crop has been completely destroyed in these areas, leading to the cessation of supplies. Currently, Shimla is receiving tomato supplies from nearby regions. The tomato crop in the surrounding areas of Shimla has been relatively less affected compared to the plains. Nevertheless, a large portion of tomatoes is being sent out from these areas, resulting in a scarcity of tomatoes in Shimla.
Due to the tomato shortage, tomatoes are being sold at higher prices in wholesale markets. As a result, people are finding tomatoes expensive in the regular markets. In the local vegetable market, tomatoes are being sold at almost double the usual rates. After the increase in tomato prices, tomatoes are becoming scarce in people’s daily meals.
Fresh vegetable prices in the Shimla local market:
Tomato – 160 Peas – 100 Shimla Chilli – 80 Cauliflower – 80 Bitter Gourd – 50 Ridge Gourd – 50 Cabbage – 30
Due to the vegetables being spoiled in the fields of farmers, there is a scarcity of tomatoes in the market. The high prices have also resulted in a decline in tomato sales.
