Shimla April 26

Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, during his Sirmaur tour on 26 April 2025, accused the Sukhu government of systematically destroying the education system in Himachal Pradesh. He alleged that over 2,000 schools have been shut down in just two years, facing strong opposition from educationists.

He criticized the government’s decision to increase the minimum admission age for Class 1, resulting in reduced admissions and closure of schools mid-session. Thakur said while schools are being shut down, the government is focused on opening more liquor shops.

He also condemned the government’s authoritarian approach towards dissent, claiming those who protest democratically are threatened with suspension, retirement, or termination. He urged the Chief Minister to listen to the people rather than suppress their democratic rights.

Highlighting the new academic calendar, Thakur said that state and district-level tournaments have been scrapped, harming the overall development of students. He also pointed out issues like stalled promotions, halted recruitments, and over 5,000 vacant JBT posts.

Thakur stated that the Sukhu government is creating a record for closing institutions and withdrawing public facilities instead of promoting development. BJP leaders Dr. Rajeev Bindal, MP Suresh Kashyap, MLA Sukhram Chaudhary, and MLA Reena Kashyap were also present.
