Stranded Vehicles on Manali-Leh Highway Rescued After Truck Mishap
1 min readHimachal Pradesh, October 6 – The journey on the Manali-Leh highway became treacherous with the onset of winter as a truck carrying goods overturned in the Baralacha Pass at an elevation of 16,000 feet on the evening of October 4th, causing the strategically vital route to be closed for 25 hours. This led to the stranding of hundreds of vehicles, including over 350 trucks, on both sides of the pass.
The situation was resolved on October 5th, as Border Roads Organization (BRO) and police personnel worked tirelessly to right the overturned truck and reopen the road. The reopening of the Manali-Leh highway brought relief to the stranded truck drivers and tourists.
From the Leh side, 136 vehicles started moving towards Manali after the highway was cleared, while from the Manali side, 467 vehicles, including 295 trucks, 160 smaller vehicles, and 12 bikers, were allowed to proceed on the morning of October 6th under the supervision of traffic authorities.
In anticipation of the winter season, police closed their check post at Sarchu on September 16th. Therefore, the safety of travelers on the stretch from Darcha onwards on the Manali-Leh route now falls under the purview of Darcha Police.
On the night of October 4th, after the road closure, the Darcha Police worked diligently to control the situation, stopping and registering all vehicles until the route was reopened.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Kelang Mayank Chaudhary emphasized the importance of registering all vehicles traveling from Manali to Leh with time schedules due to the onset of winter conditions.
