HPU :Election Duties Hamper Examination Result Preparation

Shimla, April 15: Close to three hundred employees from Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) have been assigned election duties, affecting the ongoing preparations for examination results in various departments.
Most departments have already begun rehearsals for election duties. The deployment of staff for election duties may impact the preparation of examination results in the examination branches of the university. Currently, preparations for entrance exams for PG courses are underway, with these exams scheduled for May. Additionally, undergraduate exams are set to conclude around April 25.
The biggest challenge now is to release the results on time. Historically, students have faced delays in receiving their results. Each employee at HPU shoulders a workload equivalent to that of four employees. From checking papers to evaluating assessments, the responsibility rests on the shoulders of teachers.
With the majority of the academic workload concentrated in the examination wing during May and June, the assignment of employees to election duties could significantly disrupt operations.
The Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) of non-teaching staff at HPU has urged a reconsideration of assigning election duties to university employees. They argue that the continuous deployment of university staff for voter registration and electoral list correction tasks has created significant difficulties in fulfilling the various duties across departments and branches of the university. This additional burden is affecting the employees’ productivity.
Rajesh Thakur, the president of the employee union, along with other office bearers, emphasized that election duties would adversely affect the university’s functioning. The JCC has demanded the cancellation of election duties for university employees. A written request has been sent from the examination branch to the vice chancellor, requesting that a minimum number of employees be assigned election duties, with no employees to be sent from the examination branch.
