Schoolchildren Test Water Quality in 2,662 Higher and Senior Secondary Schools Across Himachal

Water and Climate Conservation Campaign turns science into hands-on learning

Shimla: Students across Himachal Pradesh are taking science beyond the classroom by testing the quality of water from local sources as part of the ‘Water and Climate Conservation Campaign’ launched by Samagra Shiksha.

Under the initiative, 2,662 higher and senior secondary schools have been provided Field Testing Kits (FTKs). Students conduct water quality tests three times a year, with the findings shared with the Jal Shakti Department and concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrates for necessary action wherever required.

One teacher from each participating school has also been trained in drinking water quality assessment and the use of Field Testing Kits. The training and distribution initiative was undertaken through an MoU between Samagra Shiksha, HPSES and the State Water and Sanitation Mission of the Jal Shakti Department.

Samagra Shiksha Director Rajesh Sharma said the campaign is designed to develop not only scientific skills but also a sense of responsibility towards water conservation, the environment and climate. He said students are learning by conducting water tests themselves and connecting scientific concepts with real-life challenges.

The initiative is aligned with the experiential and skill-based learning approach of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes hands-on learning and practical understanding. Through water testing, students are gaining experience in observing, analysing and understanding scientific results rather than simply studying concepts from textbooks.

Students and teachers are also participating in volunteer groups working towards the study, conservation and rejuvenation of local water sources, with support from environmental organisations.

Schools are organising ‘Water Festivals’ twice a year with the participation of Panchayati Raj institutions, the Health Department and other stakeholders. Activities including poster-making, essay writing and debates on water conservation are further encouraging students to engage with environmental issues.

The campaign is thus combining practical science education with environmental awareness, helping young learners develop into informed and responsible citizens committed to water and climate conservation.
