October 22, 2026

Visit by German academic expert strengthens prospects for dual-degree programmes, digital education and interdisciplinary research

Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, is exploring strategic academic and research collaboration with Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences, Germany, following a two-day visit by Prof. Dr. Dietrich Darr.

During his visit, Prof. Darr held discussions with Vice-Chancellor Prof. HS Baweja on potential areas of mutual cooperation. The discussions led to a formal Agreement in principle outlining areas for future collaboration. Prof. Darr also delivered a presentation highlighting opportunities for academic exchange and joint research, expressing particular interest in food technology, sustainability analysis and supply chain management. The formal agreement on mutual areas of cooperation was signed in the presence of Dr KK Raina, Scientific Advisor, Dr BS Dilta, OSD Projects and Planning, Dr Kapil Kathuria, Head Department of Agribusiness Management, Dr Piyush Mehta and Dr Rashmi Chaudhary.

The proposed collaboration will focus on horticulture, forestry and allied sciences, with emphasis on academic transformation, student development, interdisciplinary research and international exposure. Potential initiatives include dual-degree programmes in biotechnology and bioinformatics, food technology, landscape architecture and agri-food economics.

Commenting on the development Prof Baweja said that the universities will also explore linking Nauni University’s planned Distance and Online Education (DOE) programme with the International Online Semester programme offered by the German university, potentially expanding international learning opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students. He added that the partnership envisages integrating emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, climate-smart agriculture, ecosystem management, agribusiness management, digital technologies and skill and entrepreneurship development into academic curricula. Experiential learning, multidisciplinary programmes and stronger industry linkages will help prepare students to become innovators and entrepreneurs.

Research collaboration may encompass climate-resilient horticulture, conservation and sustainable utilisation of Himalayan biodiversity, ecological farming, apiculture and apitherapy, traditional knowledge systems, food processing, forest ecosystem services, agroforestry, medicinal and aromatic plants, and integrated pest and disease management. Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies will also be explored for agricultural innovation and ecosystem management.

The proposed partnership will encourage faculty and student exchanges, joint research and publications, academic seminars, specialised short-term programmes, and the exchange of academic materials and expertise. It also aims to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, industry partnerships and resource generation while addressing challenges in sustainable agriculture, food systems and natural resource management.

The initiative aligns with UHF vision of becoming a globally competitive institution and a role model for universities across the Himalayan region. The collaboration is expected to strengthen international engagement, broaden opportunities for students and researchers and promote research-driven solutions for sustainable development.
