Shimla, October 30 — Former BJP State President and MP Suresh Kashyap said that India is witnessing a major demographic shift, with the elderly population (60+ years) projected to more than double from 10 crore in 2011 to 23 crore by 2036. He stated that this transformation demands strong social security and care systems, and the Modi Government has proactively introduced welfare measures to ensure dignity, safety and a better quality of life for senior citizens.
Kashyap said that the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, along with other key ministries, state governments and civil society organizations, is working towards holistic senior citizen welfare. He highlighted several flagship initiatives:
• Atal Pension Yojana (APY) — A landmark pension scheme launched in 2015 providing guaranteed monthly pension of ₹1000–₹5000 after 60 years. Enrolment has risen from 1.54 crore in 2019 to 8.27 crore by October 2025, with assets under management exceeding ₹49,000 crore.
• Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY) — A comprehensive programme aimed at empowering senior citizens through social inclusion and focused welfare initiatives.
• Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) — Launched in 2017 to provide assistive devices like wheelchairs, walkers, hearing aids and dentures to BPL elderly and those earning less than ₹15,000 per month, helping restore daily mobility and independence.
• Ayushman Bharat – PM-JAY Expansion for Elderly — The October 2024 expansion allows all citizens aged 70+ to receive cashless treatment up to ₹5 lakh annually, irrespective of income. Over 40 lakh elderly beneficiaries have already enrolled by January 2025.
Kashyap said these initiatives reflect the Modi Government’s commitment to secure the future of India’s aging population and ensure that senior citizens live with care, respect and financial protection.
