Jairam Thakur Attacks Himachal Government, Predicts BJP Victory in Upcoming Civic Polls

Mandi, May 20: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur launched a sharp attack on the Congress government during a public outreach campaign in the Seraj Assembly constituency on Tuesday. Addressing public meetings in Shilhbagi, Shivakhad, Bagachanogi and Bhatkidhar areas in support of BJP-backed candidate Shiv Chand, he accused the Sukhu government of halting development works across the state.
Jairam Thakur alleged that even after more than three years in power, the Congress government has failed to deliver on its promises of “system change” and instead focused on shutting down institutions opened during the previous BJP regime. He claimed that development activities in Himachal Pradesh have come to a standstill under the current government.
Criticising the state government’s disaster management efforts, the former Chief Minister said that debris from last year’s monsoon damage is yet to be cleared in many areas, while several rural bus routes remain suspended due to poor road conditions. He said villagers are still being forced to carry heavy loads on their backs because of damaged roads.
Thakur said that during his political career, he consistently worked towards connecting remote villages with roads to reduce hardships for rural residents. He questioned whether people wanted a government focused on development or one that “locks development projects.”
Accusing Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of favouritism, he alleged that government resources were being distributed selectively while opposition constituencies and even dissenting Congress legislators were being ignored.
Referring to the recent municipal body elections, Jairam Thakur claimed that the BJP secured a decisive victory by winning 18 out of 25 municipal councils and 13 out of 22 nagar panchayats. He asserted that the BJP would also emerge victorious in the upcoming municipal corporation elections in Mandi, Palampur, Dharamshala and Solan scheduled for May 31.
The BJP leader further said that people of the state have lost trust in the Congress government due to what he described as “false guarantees and misleading claims.” He expressed confidence that the BJP would continue to gain public support in the upcoming Panchayati Raj elections.
Commenting on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks against the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister, Jairam Thakur termed the statements as a reflection of political frustration and accused the Congress of using inappropriate language against constitutional authorities.
