The Department of Entomology, Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, celebrated World Bee Day today on the university campus. This year’s theme was ‘Bee Engaged with Youth’. The BSc third-year students participated in the celebrations, which featured engaging activities designed to raise awareness about the crucial role of bees in our ecosystem. The students showcased their creativity and knowledge through group poster presentations, highlighting various themes related to bees and their significance.

The event saw active participation from the department’s faculty, including HOD Dr. Subhash Verma, Dr. Kiran Rana, and Dr. Meena Thakur. They educated the students about the importance of bees, emphasizing bee conservation, pollination ecology, and the role of bees in sustaining biodiversity. This event provided a platform for students to demonstrate their understanding and offered opportunities for meaningful interactions between students and faculty, fostering a spirit of collaboration and learning within the department.

World Bee Day is celebrated to draw attention to the threats faced by bees and other pollinators due to human activities. Pollination is essential for the survival of ecosystems, with nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species and over 75% of food crops relying on animal pollination. Additionally, 35% of global agricultural land benefits from pollinators. They not only contribute directly to food security but also play a vital role in conserving biodiversity. To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face, and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN designated May 20 as World Bee Day.
