Employee Unions Warn of Future Agitation if Issue Persists
Shimla, March 7, 2025 – The Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Teachers’ Welfare Association and Non-Teaching Staff Union submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor, demanding that the delays in salary payments should not be repeated in the future.
In a joint statement, the employee leaders expressed their frustration, stating that instead of focusing on academic responsibilities, teachers are being forced to protest for their salaries. The non-teaching staff union also voiced its concerns, blaming the university administration for creating an atmosphere of unrest among employees.
“For the first time in the history of the university, employees had to come out on the streets to demand their rightful salaries,” said the union representatives. They claimed that yesterday’s protest forced the Education Minister to intervene, resulting in the immediate release of salaries.
The unions criticized the shift from an annual grant system to a quarterly and now monthly disbursement, calling it “completely unfair.” They demanded that the university should receive its entire budget at once to avoid financial uncertainty.
Warning of future agitation, the employees declared that if such delays occur again, they would march to the Secretariat and stage a massive protest. They also thanked the university staff for their support and urged them to stay united for future struggles.
