Shimla, September 18: The monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly has begun. On the first day of the 7-day session, the members of the assembly paid condolences to the late legislator Khub Ram. Prior to commencing the question period, the opposition requested a discussion under Rule 67 on the topic of disasters.

Opposition leader Jai Ram Thakur stated in the assembly that Himachal Pradesh has been grappling with disasters for the past ten years. 441 people have lost their lives, and many people have lost their homes due to floods and landslides. Therefore, all other work in the assembly should be halted, and a discussion should be conducted on this matter. In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshvardhan Chauhan stated that the government has already imposed a stoppage on discussions under Rule 102 regarding disasters. Therefore, there is no need for a discussion under Rule 67. Dissatisfied with this response, the opposition began protesting in the assembly and subsequently walked out.

Outside the assembly, opposition leader Jai Ram Thakur said that the state has been dealing with disasters, and many people have become homeless. People were hopeful that there would be a discussion in the assembly about the disaster and the sentiments of the public would be respected, but the government is avoiding the discussion. In protest, the opposition had to walk out. However, after the walkout, the opposition returned to the assembly and participated in the session. It is now expected that a discussion under Rule 102 on disasters will take place.
