Home Built on Hope: Welfare Scheme Changes Life of Hamirpur Labourer

2 min read

Hamirpur, June 07: Every day, construction workers help build homes, offices, and commercial complexes that become symbols of comfort and security for others. Yet many of these workers spend years struggling to build a permanent roof over their own heads.

For Sonu Kumari, a daily-wage labourer from Bhalun village in Nadaun subdivision of Hamirpur district, owning a pucca house seemed like a distant dream. Despite years of hard work and sacrifice, financial constraints repeatedly forced her family to postpone plans for constructing a home.

The turning point came when Sonu and her son Abhishek registered with the Himachal Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board. While exploring the Board’s welfare initiatives, they learned about a housing assistance scheme designed specifically for registered construction workers.

The family applied for financial support and was sanctioned ₹1.30 lakh under the scheme. The assistance provided the much-needed boost that enabled them to begin construction.

Using the grant along with their modest savings, Sonu and Abhishek gradually turned their long-cherished dream into reality. Today, the family proudly lives in a completed house that stands as a symbol of years of perseverance and determination.

For the mother-son duo, the support was more than a financial grant—it was an opportunity to secure stability and dignity for their future.

Their story reflects the impact of welfare initiatives aimed at improving the lives of workers who form the backbone of the construction industry. Beyond housing support, the Welfare Board provides assistance for healthcare, education, skill development, marriage, pensions, disability benefits, and emergency financial needs.

Officials say such schemes are designed to ensure that workers and their families receive support at crucial stages of life, helping them overcome economic challenges and improve their quality of life.

As thousands of labourers across Himachal Pradesh continue to contribute to the state’s growth and infrastructure, stories like that of Sonu Kumari highlight how targeted welfare programmes can make a meaningful difference—one family, one dream, and one home at a time.
