Guru Dutt’s Life and Legacy Take Centre Stage at Shoolini University
Solan, October 22: Delhi-based theatre group Raabta presented *Bemisaal Guru Dutt: Zindagi, Cinema Aur Khwaab* at Shoolini University, exploring the life, cinematic legacy and creative struggles of the legendary filmmaker. The performance, attended by around 360 students, faculty members and guests, marked the first pre-event of the seventh Shoolini Literature Festival, scheduled for March 12–14, 2027.
The 105-minute production combined biographical storytelling, music, dance and dramatic lighting to portray the artistic vision and personal vulnerabilities of Guru Dutt, whose films, including *Pyaasa* and *Kaagaz Ke Phool*, remain landmarks of Indian cinema.
Moving between humour, nostalgia and emotional intensity, the play examined the relationship between creativity and emotional well-being, drawing attention to the human experiences behind the filmmaker’s enduring artistic legacy.
Prof. Ashoo Khosla, Chief Learning Officer and Director of the Shoolini Literature Festival, said Guru Dutt’s life highlighted how exceptional creative talent could coexist with deep personal vulnerability. She said the performance encouraged students to reflect on both his cinematic contribution and the emotional dimensions of an artist’s life.
Chancellor Prof. P.K. Khosla said universities should provide platforms where literature, cinema, science and the performing arts intersect, fostering imagination, sensitivity and empathy among students. He and Mrs. S. Khosla felicitated the visiting artists after the performance.
Raabta is known for productions that bring literature and cultural history to the stage through storytelling, poetry and live music. Its works include *Wo Afsaana*, based on the relationship between Sahir Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam, and *Chand Qissey*, featuring stories from Urdu literature.
Students from Shoolini University’s theatre group assisted in organising the event and coordinating arrangements, gaining practical exposure to theatre production and event management.
The performance marked the beginning of cultural engagements leading up to the 2027 literature festival, reinforcing the university’s focus on integrating artistic expression with broader conversations on society and human experience.
