Food Supply Department Must Ensure Public Access to Schemes – Deputy Commissioner

A review meeting of the District-Level Public Distribution System Committee was held today under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap in Shimla. Discussions covered the availability and distribution of essential goods, inspection reports, diesel, petrol, kerosene distribution, selection of beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013, Aadhaar card status, and new fair price shops.
The Deputy Commissioner stated that 1,94,649 ration cards in the district benefit 7,19,041 people. From August to December 2024, ₹14.77 crore worth of goods were distributed through 612 fair price shops. The administration aims to ensure timely benefits and increase awareness about government schemes.
Over the past five months, 2,064 inspections were conducted, leading to ₹65,763 in fines deposited into the government treasury. Under NFSA 2013, the district set a target to enroll 4,36,790 people (72,147 rural families, 12,489 urban families), but 1,67,365 beneficiaries are yet to be covered. The highest pending enrollments are in Shimla Municipal Corporation (46,963), Mashobra Block (28,041), Jubbal (27,839), Chopal (13,325), and Rampur (7,706).
New fair price shops were approved in various panchayats, including Balg, Bijmal, Bamta, Chanjju-Chopal, Kaled Majhewati, Sanarsa, Banoti, and Tharola.
District Vigilance Committee Meeting
A District Vigilance Committee meeting was also held, reviewing 573 meetings conducted at fair price shops over the last five months. The government has now designated the Additional District Magistrate (Law & Order) to oversee food distribution complaints under NFSA. No cases of misuse or misallocation of food grains were reported during this period.
