Hamirpur, April 17: An elderly couple from Harnerd village near Hamirpur has set an inspiring example by achieving a remarkable yield through natural farming. 76-year-old Teerthu Devi and her 83-year-old husband Rikhi Ram Sharma produced around 200 kg of potatoes from just two marlas of land, surprising even agricultural experts.
The couple, who cultivate nearly 15 kanal of land, shifted to natural farming about two and a half years ago under the Rajiv Gandhi Natural Farming Khushhal Kisan Yojana. Earlier dependent on chemical inputs, they now grow wheat, maize, turmeric, coriander, mustard, soyabean, okra, and other crops using eco-friendly methods.
Their success has significantly increased their income, with produce selling quickly in local markets. Inspired by their achievements, several other farmers in the village are also adopting natural farming practices.
Officials stated that around 25,000 farmers in the district have been linked to the scheme, with over 3,000 hectares brought under natural farming and substantial subsidies provided.
