In a recent statement, Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur accused Congress of conspiring to defeat Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. Addressing the gathering at the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Samman Abhiyan event in Shimla’s Chhoda Maidan, Thakur alleged that under the direct supervision of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Congress had orchestrated plans to prevent Dr. Ambedkar’s rise to power.
Thakur stated that during the 1937 Bombay Presidency Legislative Assembly elections, Congress tried to defeat Dr. Ambedkar by fielding famous cricketer Balu Palwankar against him, though he lost. This action, according to Thakur, clearly highlighted Congress’s opposition to Dr. Ambedkar. The former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister further elaborated on how Congress manipulated elections and denied Dr. Ambedkar a chance to be elected to the Constitution Assembly. He also accused Congress of continuing such practices, citing their efforts in the 1952 general elections to defeat Dr. Ambedkar by fielding relatively lesser-known candidates.
Thakur also brought attention to Dr. Ambedkar’s legal challenges against the rejection of thousands of votes in 1952, which he claimed was part of Congress’s strategy to undermine him. In addition, he highlighted that even Prime Minister Nehru campaigned against Dr. Ambedkar to ensure his defeat, underlining the Congress’s persistent opposition to the Dalit leader.
The event was attended by various leaders and workers including Rakesh Dogra, Ramesh Sharma, and other prominent figures who expressed their respect for Dr. Ambedkar and condemned Congress for its long-standing opposition to him.
