An 88-year-old diabetic patient suffering from severe heart blockages was successfully treated at Fortis Hospital Mohali using the advanced Laser Coronary Angioplasty (ELCA) technique.
The procedure was performed by Dr RK Jaswal, Head of Cardiology and Director – Cathlabs, using high-intensity laser technology to clear blocked coronary arteries. The patient had earlier undergone angioplasty more than 30 years ago, but the old stents had become completely blocked due to calcium deposits and scarring.
Considering the patient’s age and critical condition, open-heart surgery was ruled out. However, the advanced laser-based treatment helped restore blood flow successfully, and the patient was discharged after a smooth recovery within two days.
Dr Jaswal said the ELCA technique is especially beneficial in complex heart conditions, failed stents, clot-heavy heart attacks, and patients with previous bypass surgeries, as it vaporises blockages without causing sudden artery blockage or clot formation.
Fortis Hospital Mohali stated that the advanced technology offers new hope for high-risk cardiac patients who may not be suitable for conventional procedures.
