BCS Students Dazzle with Enchanting Performance of “Aladdin”
2 min readBishop Cotton School, Shimla, recently showcased an enchanting production of the classic musical “Aladdin,” performed by the junior and middle school students (Classes 4 – 8). The event took place in the historic Irwin Hall and ran for three days, with performances for other schools in Shimla before concluding with a special Saturday night show attended by parents and the chief guest, Ms. Manasi Sahay Thakur, IAS Officer.
Ms. Thakur expressed her admiration for the students’ performances, particularly praising the boys’ portrayal of female characters: “This is the first time in my life that the stories I fantasized about in childhood came to life on stage. The play carries valuable life lessons, and the BCS motto ‘Overcome evil with good’ perfectly aligns with its theme. I encourage the boys to embrace new challenges in life and not let failure deter them. A strong value system, like having a genie, helps you navigate life’s obstacles.”
BCS Director Simon Weale commended the collaborative effort behind the production, thanking everyone involved: “The choir, musicians, and backstage crew worked tirelessly for weeks. This production exemplifies the teamwork and leadership that we cultivate at BCS, preparing our students to make the world a better place.”
As a fully residential boys’ boarding school, Bishop Cotton School brought its community together for this production, with students dedicating weeks to rehearsals after their summer break. The choir and musicians, led by senior boys, delivered flawless performances, while the backstage crew expertly managed lighting and props.
The production of “Aladdin” presented a vibrant portrayal of Arabic culture in the streets of Agrabah. The story follows Aladdin, a commoner who falls in love with Princess Jasmine and embarks on a journey to win her heart. The students executed the iconic dance sequence “A Whole New World” with zeal, donning elaborate costumes and performing against beautifully designed sets.
Throughout the play, Aladdin’s journey is marked by his discovery of a magical lamp and the genie within, who grants him three wishes. However, Aladdin’s desire for power leads to complications, culminating in a showdown with the villainous Jaffar. Ultimately, Aladdin learns the value of honesty, frees the genie, and wins Princess Jasmine’s heart, leading to their happily ever after.
The production not only entertained but also reinforced important values, making it a memorable experience for all who attended.
