Shimla, October 30 — BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan has announced that the Central Government has approved a ₹1422-crore healthcare infrastructure strengthening project for Himachal Pradesh with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The funding structure includes ₹1138 crore as external aid and ₹284 crore as state share.
Mahajan said that major medical colleges — Hamirpur, Nahan, Mandi, Tanda, Chamba and IGMC Shimla — will be upgraded under this project. A provision of ₹650 crore has been made for these enhancements, including ₹300 crore for establishing a Cancer Hospital in Hamirpur.
Key components of the project include:
• Installation of 3-Tesla MRI machines at Hamirpur, Tanda, Shimla and Nerchowk Medical Colleges
• High-energy LINAC machines for cancer care at Mandi and Chamba
• Introduction of robotic-assisted surgery equipment
• Development of 67 model health institutions
• Digital transformation of health services across the state
Expressing gratitude to PM Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, Mahajan said this initiative will mark a new era of modern and quality healthcare in Himachal Pradesh.
Taking a dig at the Chief Minister, he expressed disappointment that CM Sukhu claimed the funding to be from the state government, whereas the project is fully financed by the Centre with JICA support.
