National Sports Day Celebrated with Enthusiasm at RKMV

Shimla, August 29, 2026: National Sports Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Government College for Girls, Shimla, on Saturday. The event, organised by the college’s Department of Physical Education, witnessed active participation from around 1,300 students.

College Principal Dr Anurita Saxena attended the programme as the chief guest. Addressing the students, she said National Sports Day is observed every year on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, popularly known as the “Hockey Wizard”. She highlighted his simplicity, discipline and remarkable contribution to Indian hockey, which brought international recognition to the country.

As a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, Dr Saxena and members of the college fraternity paid floral homage to the legendary sportsperson and remembered his outstanding contribution to Indian hockey and his enduring legacy in the world of sports.

Dr Saxena encouraged students to participate actively in sports and emphasised the importance of physical fitness, discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship during student life.

A range of sporting and team-building activities were organised for the students, including baton relay, carrom, chess, cross-country race, tug of war, fun games and table tennis. Students participated enthusiastically in the competitions as representatives of their respective faculties, creating an atmosphere of healthy competition, teamwork and camaraderie.

The programme aimed to encourage character building, teamwork and a spirit of excellence among the students while providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate their physical abilities, competitive spirit, cooperation and leadership skills.

The occasion also marked the culmination of the 15-day fitness camp, ‘FIT TO WIN – A Pathway to Sporting Excellence’, organised by the Department of Physical Education. The successful completion of the camp reflected the department’s continued commitment to promoting fitness, participation in sports and a healthy lifestyle among students.

At the concluding ceremony, prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions.

The celebrations concluded on an energetic and positive note, reinforcing the message that sports play an important role in character building, strengthening teamwork and inspiring individuals to strive for excellence.

The programme was successfully organised by the Department of Physical Education under the coordination of Dr Jitendra Thakur, with the active cooperation of the Principal, faculty members and students.
