National Seminar highlights crucial role of plant biodiversity in Himalayan region

The Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources organised a two-day national seminar in collaboration with ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, and MS Swaminathan School of Agriculture, supported by the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Biotechnology at Shoolini University. The seminar, themed “Plant Biodiversity for Food Nutrition and Health Security in the North-West Himalayas,” brought together eminent personalities and experts to discuss the pressing need for biodiversity conservation in the region.
Chief Guest Dr. RS Paroda, President of ISPGR and Chairman of TAAS, New Delhi, highlighted the need to protect herbal plants, diversify crops beyond staples like soybean and kiwi, and address malnutrition issues among Indian children.
Prof Atul Khosla, Vice Chancellor of Shoolini University, welcomed all the dignitaries and emphasised the importance of industry and biotechnology in safeguarding the Western Himalayan ranges. In his welcome address, he underscored the significance of seeking government subsidies for initiatives focused on protecting biodiversity and the environment. Prof Khosla highlighted the integral role of economics alongside science and environment in achieving sustainable outcomes.
Dr Sanjay Kumar Chairman ASRB, New Delhi shared insights into the deep-rooted connection between humanity and the rich biodiversity of the Himalayas. Stressing the therapeutic properties of Himalayan flora, he advocated for community involvement and the crucial role of media in raising awareness.
Dr. PL Gautam, Chancellor of Dr RPCAU, PUSA, Bihar, emphasised the shared heritage of biodiversity and the need for concerted efforts to conserve the environment.
Chancellor Shoolini University Prof PK Khosla expressed the institution’s commitment to shining to the best of its ability in contributing to biodiversity conservation.
Dr. Anuradha Aggarwal, General Secretary of ISPGR and Organising Secretary of the seminar, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the esteemed guests and chief guests for their valuable contributions.
The National Seminar also marked the official release of the book titled “French Bean Diseases,” compiled by Dr. SK Gupta and Dr. Monica Sharma. This publication adds to the body of knowledge surrounding plant health and contributes to the ongoing dialogue on biodiversity conservation.

The publication also features insightful articles from invited speakers, offering a comprehensive resource on the seminar’s discussions.
