2 min read

Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT) has once again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence with the inauguration of the fourth one-week national workshop titled “Statistical Techniques in Biological, Computational, and Medical Sciences (STBMS-2024) version 4.0.” Conducted biannually since 2016 by the Centre of Healthcare Technologies and Informatics (CEHTI), Department of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, the STBMS workshop offers a valuable platform for enhancing collaborative knowledge across these dynamic fields.

Scheduled from June 10 to June 15, 2024, the workshop provides participants with the opportunity to delve into the application of statistical techniques in biological, computational, and medical sciences. This year’s workshop has attracted a diverse group of 37 participants, including undergraduate students, Ph.D. scholars, and faculty members from various regions of India such as Jammu, Gujarat, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, and Himachal Pradesh, reflecting the program’s wide appeal and versatility.

The inaugural program, held on June 10, 2024, began with the Saraswati Vandana in the esteemed presence of Chief Guest and Session Speaker Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma, alongside JUIT’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajendra Kumar Sharma, Dean A&R Prof. Ashok Kumar Gupta, and Registrar & Dean of Students Maj Gen Rakesh Bassi (Retd.). Workshop Convener Prof. Tiratha Raj Singh, along with Coordinators Dr. Neel Kanth and Dr. Ragini Raj Singh, welcomed attendees with an overview of the STBMS workshop and its beneficial activities, which include lectures and hands-on sessions.

Prof. Rakesh Kumar Bajaj, Head of the Department of Mathematics, and Prof. Sudhir Syal, Head of the Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, also extended their welcome to the participants. Prof. Tiratha Raj Singh highlighted the progressive knowledge shared in the workshop over the past decade.

The first two days of the workshop focused on foundational statistical concepts, moving from basics to advanced levels necessary for analyzing diverse data types. Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma delivered talks covering the essentials of statistics, including the importance of statistics in biosciences, correlation, regression, parametric and non-parametric tests, supplemented by hands-on sessions using SPSS. Prof. Tiratha Raj Singh discussed the applications of bioinformatics in biomedical and healthcare contexts.

The subsequent three days will feature sessions on machine learning and deep learning techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and factor analysis. The workshop will conclude on Saturday.

This event not only facilitates the sharing of knowledge but also fosters collaboration among participants from various regions and disciplines, underscoring JUIT’s commitment to advancing education and research in statistical techniques and their applications in biological, computational, and medical sciences.
