A young man named Navin, who had gone to celebrate Diwali at his in-laws’ house in the Sain village of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, tragically lost his life due to severe burns. Allegations have been made by his father, Prakash Chand, claiming that Navin’s wife splashed oil on him, and his mother-in-law set him on fire. Subsequently, he was thrown into the courtyard by his brother-in-law and father-in-law. The Sarkaghat police have registered a case of murder against four individuals from the in-laws’ side based on the father’s complaint.

Prakash Chand received a call on November 11, informing him that his son had suffered burns. Upon reaching the in-laws’ house in Sain, he found Navin in critical condition in the courtyard. With police assistance, Navin was rushed to the Sarkaghat Civil Hospital and later referred to Hamirpur for treatment. Unfortunately, Navin succumbed to his injuries during medical care, having sustained burns over 90% of his body.

According to Prakash, his son had informed him during the hospital transfer that his wife had thrown oil on him, and his mother-in-law set him on fire. Afterward, his brother-in-law and father-in-law threw him into the courtyard.

Navin, who was involved in the glass business in Faridabad, Haryana, had opened a shop in Navaahri, Sarkaghat, a year ago. Facing business difficulties, he closed the shop three to four months ago. In November 2022, he went to work in Badri Nalagarh. His wife had gone to her parents’ house in Sain with their daughter at that time and has been staying there since. Navin visited his in-laws on the evening of November 11.

The forensic team has visited the crime scene and collected crucial evidence. The deceased’s mother-in-law is also in critical condition, receiving treatment at Ner Chowk Medical College. The investigation is ongoing, considering all facts and aspects of the case. Technical examination is also being utilized, and clarity on the type of oil used will be determined through the forensic team’s report. – Sanjeev Kumar Gautam, DSP Sarkaghat
