Mirror to Broken Lives: ‘Adhe Adhure’ at Gaiety

Shimla, Oct 07 Ritanjali Hastir

Adhe Adhure, staged at the historic Gaiety Theatre under the direction of Rupesh Bhimta, was a bold theatrical attempt that showed considerable promise, particularly in its treatment of the play’s themes of fractured relationships, identity and the search for completeness. Mohan Rakesh’s celebrated drama has long been recognised for its layered characters and exploration of emotional and familial discontent.

Bhimta’s production largely succeeds in maintaining its pace and sustaining audience engagement. The most interesting aspect is the use of the reflection game, which opens a new vista for thought and interpretation. Rather than merely presenting the characters and their conflicts, the device encourages the audience to look at the characters—and perhaps themselves—from multiple perspectives.

The young artistes, many of whom are relatively new to the stage, deserve credit for carrying the production with confidence and commitment. Their performances give the production an energy that complements its experimental approach.

Bhimta’s own involvement is particularly noteworthy. Taking on three roles while simultaneously directing the production is a demanding task. Yet he manages to retain a degree of distance from the performance, allowing him to shape the larger theatrical picture rather than becoming consumed by his individual roles.

The production, however, could have benefited from a tighter narrative execution. At certain points, the length becomes noticeable, and a sharper treatment of some sequences could have strengthened the dramatic impact. A more disciplined pace would have allowed the central ideas to emerge with greater force.

Overall, Adhe Adhure is an ambitious and thoughtful production. Its willingness to experiment, the effective use of the reflection device and the enthusiasm of its young performers make it a worthwhile theatrical effort. More importantly, it demonstrates that even a familiar text can acquire fresh dimensions when approached through a new theatrical lens.
