Breaking Stereotypes, Bimla takes up Cart driving at Shoolini University

Breaking traditional gender stereotypes, Bimla Devi took up the role of a cart driver at Shoolini University, marking a significant step towards promoting gender equality, financial independence and inclusive employment on campus.
Bimla Devi said she was happy with her new role and valued the opportunity provided to her. “I love working here. I am very happy with my role and the opportunity I have been given,” she said.

Her work as a cart driver provided her with an opportunity to earn independently while gaining professional experience, confidence and a sense of greater responsibility. Her journey also highlighted how access to employment opportunities could enable women to explore professions traditionally associated with men.

Trustee and Vice President, Shoolini University, Avnee Khosla, said the initiative reflected the university’s commitment to providing equal opportunities. “This is a great example of gender equality, and the university is committed to ensuring such opportunities for all,” she said.
She added that creating an inclusive work environment required institutions to recognise individual potential and provide people with opportunities to take on responsibilities beyond traditional expectations.

Director, Operations, Shoolini University, (Retd.) Brigadier Sunil Dutt Mehta, who supported Bimla Devi in taking up the role, encouraged more women to consider professions traditionally dominated by men. “I want more ladies to start taking up roles like driving. He also emphasised the need for women to come forward and confidently take up diverse professional responsibilities.

Associate Director and Head, Centre for Leadership Coaching, Shoolini University, Payal Khanna, highlighted the importance of equal access to opportunities in enabling women to realise their potential. “Gender equality begins when every woman has equal access to opportunity, choice, and the space to lead,” she said.
