HPUTWA Protests Proposed Teacher Recruitment Bill on Teachers’ Day
Shimla, Sept 5: The Himachal Pradesh University Teachers’ Welfare Association (HPUTWA) held a peaceful protest at Himachal Pradesh University on Teachers’ Day against the proposed Teacher Recruitment Bill.
The association said the issue goes beyond the recruitment process and concerns academic freedom, university autonomy, teacher dignity and the quality of higher education. A large number of senior professors and teachers joined the HPUTWA executive in expressing solidarity.
HPUTWA President Prof. Nitin Vyas said teacher recruitment must take into account the specific academic requirements of universities, while Secretary Dr. Ankush Bhardwaj stressed that subject expertise, research experience, teaching ability and academic achievements should remain key criteria in selection.
Other speakers emphasised that transparency and accountability are essential, but must be balanced with institutional autonomy and academic freedom.
HPUTWA clarified that its protest is not against any individual or political party, but is aimed at protecting the academic independence of universities and the professional dignity of teachers. The association said its peaceful and democratic protest would continue.
