Sukhu Government’s Governance Model Is Based on ‘Closures’: Jairam

Shimla, August 8: Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur accused the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led government of failing to focus on development and alleged that its governance model was centred on closing institutions rather than creating new opportunities.

Addressing a felicitation and interaction programme for newly elected BJP-supported representatives from Shimla Rural, Thakur congratulated the elected representatives and called upon party workers to remain united and begin preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.

Thakur said political victories were never permanent and urged BJP workers to work at the grassroots level to strengthen public support in Shimla Rural. Citing examples from Himachal Pradesh’s political history, he said sustained public engagement and organisational strength could change electoral outcomes.

Taking aim at the state government, Thakur alleged that nearly 2,000 institutions opened during the previous BJP government in response to public demands were closed after the Congress came to power. He termed the move a reflection of what he described as the government’s “governance model of closures.”

He said the government should focus on development and public welfare instead of political differences. Thakur urged newly elected Panchayati Raj representatives to use their constitutional powers effectively and remain committed to addressing people’s concerns.

He said Panchayats represent the grassroots foundation of democracy and called upon elected representatives to work closely with people and accelerate development in their respective areas.

The programme was attended by Shimla MP Suresh Kashyap, District BJP President Keshav Chauhan, Shimla Rural candidate Ravi Mehta and other party office-bearers and newly elected representatives.

Thakur also called upon BJP workers to work collectively towards strengthening the organisation in Shimla Rural and expressed confidence that the party would return to power in the 2027 Assembly elections.
