Mandi, May 15: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to secure a major victory in all four Municipal Corporations of Mandi, Palampur, Dharamshala and Solan during the ongoing civic elections.
On the final day of election campaigning, Jai Ram Thakur led a massive roadshow across all 14 wards of Mandi Municipal Corporation and addressed a large public gathering at Chauhatta Bazaar.
Addressing party workers and supporters, he alleged that public anger against the Congress government and dissatisfaction over what he termed as “false guarantees” and anti-people policies had created a strong wave in favour of BJP across Himachal Pradesh.
The BJP leader said the Municipal Corporation elections were not merely local polls but a reflection of the growing public resentment against the state government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
Jai Ram Thakur also accused the Chief Minister of openly violating the Model Code of Conduct by allegedly announcing financial incentives for wards represented by Congress councillors during election rallies.
He termed the alleged promise of allocating Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore for wards electing Congress councillors as an attempt to influence voters and said BJP would formally approach the Election Commission seeking action over the matter.
Claiming that the large turnout during BJP’s campaign reflected the party’s growing support base, Jai Ram Thakur expressed confidence that Congress would face a major defeat in the civic polls across the state.
Senior BJP leaders including Anil Sharma, Inder Singh Gandhi, Puran Chand, former Mayor Virender Bhatt, BJP General Secretary Payal Vaidya and district president Nihal Chand were also present during the roadshow and public meeting.
