Padma Shri Awardee shares Vision on Horticulture and Farmers’ Rights with Agri students

Dr. Prem Lal Gautam, a Padam Shree Awardee and distinguished alumnus of Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF), recently visited the university’s visited the Regional Horticultural Research and Training Station (RHRTS), Sharbo, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kinnaur.
Currently serving as the Chancellor of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agriculture University, Pusa, Dr. Gautam has held several prominent leadership positions in the university system, including at UHF Nauni, and reputed international organizations. During his visit to Kinnaur to receive the Himachal Gaurav Award, Dr. Gautam visited the RHRTS, Sharbo and KVK, Kinnaur. He was warmly welcomed by Dr. Pramod Kumar, Associate Director RHRTS Sharbo along with staff and students.
An interactive session was organized with B.Sc. Horticulture students undergoing the Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) Programme at RHRTS. In his inspiring address, Dr. Gautam shared valuable insights on farmers’ rights, sustainable agricultural development, rural empowerment, and the importance of innovation-driven growth in the farming sector.
He emphasized that the future of Indian agriculture lies in scientific advancement, technology adoption, and active youth participation. Reflecting on his professional journey, he highlighted key milestones and challenges that shaped his illustrious career.
Dr. Gautam also underlined the immense potential of horticulture in enhancing farm income, ensuring nutritional security, and strengthening rural livelihoods. He encouraged students to adopt a broader vision by integrating modern technologies, climate-resilient practices, entrepreneurship, and value addition into agriculture.
Stressing the role of youth, he urged students to become job creators rather than job seekers and to lead rural transformation through innovation and scientific farming. The students actively engaged with him, seeking guidance and advice for building meaningful careers in horticulture, agriculture, and rural development. The session proved to be highly enriching, educational, and motivational for all participants.
Dr. Pramod Kumar expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Gautam for his visit and for sharing his valuable experiences with students and faculty. He also encouraged students to follow Dr. Gautam’s exemplary path of dedication, service, discipline, and excellence.
