Shimla, March 16: Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap directed officials and depot holders to ensure that only good-quality food items reach beneficiaries through the Public Distribution System during a district-level review meeting held in Shimla.
Chairing the District Public Distribution System Committee meeting, the DC emphasized proper storage of food grains to prevent spoilage and asked depot holders, Anganwadi workers, and mid-day meal staff to immediately report any damaged or substandard food items to the department.
Officials informed that ration is being distributed through 627 fair price shops across the district, including cooperative societies, private outlets, women’s groups, and government-run stores. Between December 2025 and February 2026, thousands of quintals of essential commodities including rice, wheat flour, sugar, pulses, iodized salt, and edible oil were supplied to consumers.
During the period, the department conducted 1,362 inspections and detected irregularities in five shops, imposing fines. Additional penalties were also levied for unauthorized use of domestic LPG cylinders in hotels and dhabas.
The committee also approved proposals to open 12 new fair price shops in various parts of the district to improve ration accessibility.
Later, the District Vigilance Committee reviewed the implementation of the National Food Security Act, under which thousands of families in the district receive subsidized or free food grains through the PDS network.
