Shimla, March 13, 2026: A total of 42 road accidents have been reported in Shimla district during January–February this year, resulting in 19 deaths, with 11 victims driving the vehicles themselves, Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap said while chairing a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee.

The DC termed the figures concerning and urged strict adherence to traffic rules, warning against overspeeding, drunk driving and dangerous overtaking. He noted that most accidents occurred in rural areas and were largely caused by human error.

He also directed that Apda Mitra volunteers be engaged in road safety efforts, with their contact details shared with the police and transport department so they can assist during road accidents and emergencies.

Regional Transport Officer Vishv Dev Mohan Chauhan highlighted that the District Road Safety Committee regularly reviews accident-prone black spots and recommends measures such as speed breakers, warning signage, road repairs and improved traffic management. The committee also conducts awareness campaigns in schools, colleges and public spaces to promote helmet use, seat belts and responsible driving.
