Bilaspur, December 18:
A two-day training programme for geriatric caregivers began in Bilaspur under the joint initiative of the Indian Red Cross Society (District Branch Bilaspur) and HelpAge India, with support from the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. The session was inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner Om Kant Thakur at the DLO Conference Hall, where **26 young participants** are being trained to provide community-based care and support to elderly citizens.
Speaking on the occasion, the ADC said the training will equip youth with practical skills such as elderly hygiene management, nutrition care, timely medication support, safe lifting and transferring techniques, first aid, mental and emotional assistance, and respectful caregiving practices. Participants will also be sensitised on their roles and responsibilities in supporting the elderly at home and community level.
He added that the initiative will not only help improve the quality of life for senior citizens but also open avenues for employment and self-employment in hospitals, old-age homes, home-care services, and community care sectors. Thakur encouraged youth to make the most of the programme and emphasised the need to involve educational institutions to strengthen the movement at the grassroots level.
