HP Shiva Project: Transforming Una’s Agriculture Landscape
2 min read
Una, September 10 — Himachal Pradesh’s ambitious ₹1,292-crore HP Shiva Project, supported by the Asian Development Bank, is fast emerging as a game-changer for farmers and horticulturists in Una district. Designed to enhance farmer incomes, modernize cultivation practices, and boost self-employment opportunities, the project is writing a new chapter of prosperity for rural communities.
Expanding Scope Across the District
Initially implemented in Bangana development block, the project is now being expanded across Una. According to Dr. K.K. Bhardwaj, Deputy Director of Horticulture, nearly 224 hectares of land will be brought under the project in the coming years. Demonstration sites worth ₹2 crore have already been developed, where guava, pomegranate, and kinnow plantations have shown encouraging results. Farmers are being trained in plant care, pest management, and advanced techniques to ensure higher yields and better-quality produce.
Record Plantation Targets
The pace of plantation under the scheme is equally impressive. In 2024-25, around 17,000 high-quality guava plants were planted across 15 hectares in Bangana. This year, nearly 55,000 saplings of guava, kinnow, and malta are being planted on 50 hectares of land. Bangana Block Horticulture Officer Virender Kumar shared that in July and August alone, 9 farmer groups planted 45,953 saplings over 40 hectares, directly benefitting 386 farmers.
Focus on Irrigation and Infrastructure
Alongside plantation, the project emphasizes strengthening irrigation facilities. With support from the Jal Shakti Department, seven irrigation schemes worth ₹15.25 crore are underway. These include lift water supply schemes, renovation of old irrigation systems, and construction of check dams. Farmers are also being provided with fencing, drip irrigation, and cluster-based land development — all under 100 percent subsidy.
Benefits Beyond Farming
The project is not only improving productivity but also opening up opportunities for self-employment. With scientific guidance, assured irrigation, and government support, horticulture is being positioned as a sustainable livelihood option for rural youth. Farmers are encouraged to see fruit cultivation not just as subsistence but as a profitable enterprise.
Broader Impact Across Himachal
The HP Shiva Project was formally launched by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in December 2024. By 2028, it aims to cover 6,000 hectares of land across 28 development blocks in Himachal Pradesh, directly benefitting more than 15,000 families. Districts including Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, Solan, and Una are among the major beneficiaries.
District Administration’s Role
Deputy Commissioner Una, Jatin Lal, said the district administration is ensuring effective implementation of the project. “From plantation to irrigation and marketing support, we are committed to providing complete assistance to farmers. Our effort is to not only enhance farmer incomes but also create new avenues of employment and entrepreneurship for rural youth,” he added.
With its integrated approach of modern technology, scientific training, and financial support, the HP Shiva Project is steadily transforming Una’s agriculture into a more resilient and profitable sector.
