Jairam Thakur Accuses Sukhu Government of Plot to Shut Sardar Patel University

1 min read

Mandi, December 7: Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur has accused the Congress government of attempting to shut down Sardar Patel University (SPU) in Mandi due to its name. Thakur alleged that the Sukhu government has been sabotaging SPU’s development since coming to power.

Thakur criticized the government’s move to hand over a building, constructed with central funds, to a private institution and divert grants from the PM-USHA scheme. He termed these actions as discriminatory and detrimental to the university’s growth.

He also pointed out that the government reduced SPU’s jurisdiction, which earlier included 146 colleges across five districts, to just 46 colleges. Removing colleges from Kangra and Chamba has disregarded the issues of students and parents from these regions.

Thakur warned the Sukhu government to stop its “vindictive politics” and focus on constructive governance. He stated that if the government cannot establish new institutions, it should not shut down existing ones.
