Shimla: Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, in a statement issued from Shimla, welcomed the Central Cabinet’s approval of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, calling it a revolutionary step. He emphasized that the policy was necessary to strengthen the nation’s democratic interests, and PM Narendra Modi’s government has fulfilled this need. Thakur highlighted that this initiative would ease public welfare works, ensuring no delays or halts due to the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct during frequent elections. Moreover, it would reduce election expenses, freeing up resources for the nation’s development.

Jai Ram Thakur expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President J.P. Nadda, and the entire central leadership for this major democratic reform. He pointed out that this is not the first time the country would witness simultaneous elections, as the practice was followed during the first general elections in 1951-52 and continued until 1967.

He also acknowledged the role of the committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, which includes prominent leaders and experts, in studying the feasibility of this proposal. Thakur reiterated that ‘One Nation, One Election’ would save public funds, reduce administrative stress, and ensure timely implementation of government policies. This initiative would also provide more focused governance, ensuring uninterrupted development activities.

According to the NITI Aayog report, the country witnesses at least one election every year, resulting in various direct and indirect losses. By implementing ‘One Nation, One Election,’ the nation would benefit from more efficient governance and resource management.
