Cabinet Approves SJVN’s 669 MW Lower Arun Hydro Electric Project in Nepal

Shimla, 2nd August 2024 – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an investment of Rs. 5792.36 crores for the 669 MW Lower Arun Hydro Electric Project (LAHEP) in Nepal, at a levelized tariff of Rs. 4.99 per unit. The project, to be implemented by SJVN’s wholly owned subsidiary SJVN Lower Arun Power Development Company Private Limited (SLPDC), includes an equity investment of Rs. 1737.70 crores.

Located in Nepal’s Sankhuwasabha district, LAHEP is designed to generate 2900 million units of energy annually. It will operate in tandem with the Arun-3 Hydro Electric Project without a reservoir or dam. The generated power will be evacuated through a 217 km 400 KV Double Circuit Transmission Line to Sitamarhi, Bihar.

This project is expected to be commissioned within 60 months and will contribute to the socio-economic development of Nepal and India by providing renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions by 26 lakh tons annually, and offering employment opportunities.
