On Wednesday, a three-bogie train set (Self-Propelled Hydrostatic Multiple Unit) was run for a trial on the Kalka-Shimla heritage railway track. The trial was completely successful. The train set left Kalka at 8:05 AM and reached Shimla around 1:35 PM, covering the distance in approximately two and a half hours. The train set was halted at two stations due to other trains heading towards Kalka. The trial aimed to identify and rectify any issues with the three-bogie train set.

This trial is part of continuous efforts to address and improve any shortcomings in the three-bogie train set. Prior trials were conducted from Kalka to Dharampur and from Kalka to Solan, both of which were successful. The Ministry is also making efforts to provide various facilities on the narrow-gauge rail line. The train set will be integrated for a comfortable journey, and its trial is being conducted by the Railway Board team. Three trials have been conducted in the last nine months, with adjustments made to the train set’s engine after it overheated before reaching the Taksal railway station.

The train set consists of three coaches, allowing 60 passengers in each coach. It is also known as an engineless train as it has an engine installed inside the coach. Apart from comfortable seating, the train set offers facilities like air conditioning, heating, LED lighting, and display boards. All three coaches of the train set are vestibule (interconnected), allowing passengers to move from one coach to another without stepping out of the train.

The trial run from Kalka to Shimla was successful, and a detailed report will be prepared. Further trials are planned in the coming days. – Navin Kumar, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Ambala Division.
