Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony at Government College RKMV

Shimla, October 26, 2023: The Government College for Women in Shimla hosted its Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony on October 26, 2023, with Jagat Singh Negi, Minister for Horticulture, Tribal Development, and Revenue, as the chief guest.

In his address, Minister Jagat Singh Negi praised the commitment of the current state government to provide quality education to students. He highlighted the various initiatives undertaken by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhviner Singh Sukhoo for the welfare of underprivileged and economically challenged sections of society. He mentioned the Sukh Aashray Yojana, which has provided financial assistance of INR 4.68 crores to the needy and destitute children for higher education.

Additionally, he announced that approximately 110 students from the National Cadet Corps (NCC) would have the opportunity to visit the border areas of Kinnaur district to gain insight into tribal culture and developmental activities.

Minister Negi also acknowledged the role played by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in bringing about positive changes in society, especially the constitutional amendments of 73rd and 74th under the Panchayati Raj Act of 1993, which ensured 33% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj institutions, promoting women’s empowerment and participation in grassroots governance.

Regarding education, Minister Jagat Singh Negi noted that the state’s literacy rate stands at an impressive 88%. He also revealed that the government is actively filling vacant teaching positions in remote and rural areas to strengthen the foundational framework of education.

The Minister emphasized that the government has increased financial assistance to families severely affected by disasters. The aid has been raised from INR 1.3 lakhs to INR 7 lakhs for fully damaged homes, and partially damaged homes will receive INR 1 lakh as compensation.

Jagat Singh Negi assured the audience of the government’s commitment to constructing a new hostel for tribal students at the Government College for Women and to present a proposal to the Chief Minister for constructing hostels for other students from rural areas.

The event was also graced by Chetan Singh Thakur, the State President of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), and several other dignitaries, faculty members, and students. Dr. Gopal Chauhan, Principal of the Government College for Women, provided an overview of the college’s annual activities and achievements during the occasion.
