The Department of Environmental Science at Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Nauni, Solan, recently marked World Ozone Day with a series of engaging activities. The theme for World Ozone Day 2024 was ‘Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action.”
The event featured a quiz competition and insightful lectures, drawing participation from approximately 60 students, faculty members and SPACE club members. The sessions included an interactive discussion on the dual nature of ozone, addressing various questions about current climate action efforts.
Dr. Pratima Vaidya opened the event by emphasizing the significance of World Ozone Day in celebrating the achievements of the Montreal Protocol.
Dr. CL Thakur, Dean of the College of Forestry and the chief guest of the event, inspired attendees to undertake individual actions to combat ozone depletion. He stressed the importance of conserving natural resources and adapting lifestyles to live in harmony with nature. Prof. SK Bhardwaj, Head of the Department of Environmental Science, highlighted that ancient Vedic texts recognize the importance of the ozone layer in protecting Earth from harmful UV radiation. He noted that safeguarding the ozone layer aligns with six Sustainable Development Goals, and he praised the Montreal Protocol for its pivotal role in advancing climate action. Additionally, Vasu Bhanot, a doctoral research scholar from the Department, delivered a compelling lecture on the formation and depletion processes of the ozone layer.
The quiz competition was a highlight of the day, with Team Jal comprising Yagyesh, Harsh, and Tanya emerging as the winners. The celebration underscored the critical role of individual and collective efforts in addressing environmental challenges and advancing climate action.
