World No Tobacco Day celebrated at AIIMS Bilaspur

Continuing Medical Education (CME) on the theme for World No Tobacco Day 2022 “Tobacco-Threat to our environment” was organized by Department of Physiology, AIIMS Bilaspur on 31.05.2022. This event was conducted under the guidance of Patron-in-chief Prof. (Dr). Vir Singh Negi, Executive Director, AIIMS. Dr. Punam Verma, Additional Professor, Department of Physiology, AIIMS welcomed all to the event. Co-Patron Dr. Sanjay Vikrant, Dean Academic AIIMS Bilaspur inaugurated the event. He informed that tobacco kills over 8 million people every year and destroys our environment, further harming human health. World No Tobacco day is celebrated every year to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. This year theme is chosen to highlight the impact of tobacco on environment. Tobacco growing, manufacturing and use pollutes the planet and damages the health of all people. It is important to Quit tobacco for your health and the health of our planet. The event was organized in the Ayush block to create awareness among patients and their accompanying family members. The event was attended by more than 100 patients, their relatives and health personnel’s including faculty members, senior residents, junior residents, MBBS students and nursing officers.
Dr. Darwin Kaushal, Associate Professor, Department of ENT AIIMS Bilaspur informed about tobacco and its affects on environment. Dr. Sanjay Bhagat ENT Surgeon, Gondia, Maharashtra highlighted about adverse effects of tobacco on health. He informed that major problem of tobacco consumption is cancers of mouth. Tobacco consumption may also lead to cancer of lungs, heart problems and stroke. Dr. Amit Goyal Professor & Head, Department of ENT AIIMS Jodhpur gave brief description about Anti Tobacco Campaign in India. Awareness videos and slogans on the theme of this year’s world no tobacco day prepared by medical students were also displayed during CME.
