Shimla, August 4:
Under the directives of Chief Medical Officer Dr. Yashpal Ranta, an awareness session was organized at the Maternal and Child Health Centre, Ripon Hospital, Shimla, as part of “World Breastfeeding Week” observed from August 1 to 7. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and ASHA workers were sensitized about the importance of breastfeeding. Awareness activities are also being conducted at the block level across the district.
Dr. Ranta emphasized that mother’s milk is not just the best food for infants but a life-saving nectar that boosts immunity and protects against diseases like pneumonia and diarrhea, thereby reducing infant mortality. He highlighted the significance of feeding colostrum within half an hour of birth and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by complementary feeding. Breastfeeding also lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancers in mothers. He urged the public to discourage bottle feeding to prevent infections and promote breastfeeding for a healthier future generation.
