2 min readShimla, Sept. 28, 2023: The Wildlife Wing of the Forest Department in Himachal Pradesh is all set to celebrate the 72nd Wildlife Week from October 2nd to 9th, 2023, with a series of engaging programs aimed at raising awareness about wildlife conservation. This year’s theme for the Wildlife Week is “Development and Wildlife Path.”
Anil Thakur, the Additional Chief Conservator of the Wildlife Wing, Forest Department, highlighted the importance of this annual event in promoting wildlife conservation and educating the public about the state’s diverse wildlife.
During the week-long celebration, a range of activities and programs will be organized throughout the state. These include a mini marathon, workshops, painting competitions, and more, all designed to foster a deeper understanding of the region’s rich biodiversity and the need for its protection.
Mr. Thakur also emphasized the declining population of monkeys in Himachal Pradesh. According to a monkey census conducted in 2016, the state was home to approximately 316,000 monkeys. To address the issue of overpopulation, 176,000 monkeys have undergone sterilization procedures in the state. Presently, a fresh census of monkeys is underway, with expected completion by March 2024.
The Wildlife Week serves as a platform to not only celebrate the natural heritage of Himachal Pradesh but also to underline the significance of coexistence between development and wildlife conservation. It offers an opportunity for citizens to engage in activities that foster a sense of responsibility towards the state’s precious wildlife and natural ecosystems.
The Forest Department encourages active participation from residents, wildlife enthusiasts, and conservationists, hoping that this year’s Wildlife Week will further strengthen the collective resolve to protect and preserve the diverse flora and fauna of Himachal Pradesh.
