Waste Under Arrest started in Lala Lajpat Rai District Correctional Home, Dharamshala

Dharamshala, Nov 25 – For the first time in the country, Waste Under Arrest (Waste Management Model) started in Lala Lajpat Rai District Correctional Home, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.and the program was inaugurated in the presence of Satwant Atwal, ADGP, Prisons and  Vikas Bhatnagar, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons and Correctional Home.
The main objective of this scheme is to educate and aware prison inmates and employees about waste management and execution and to develop waste as a means of income by upcycling for which the Prisons Department is starting this program in association with West Warriors NGO.
West Warriors started the Model Prison Program as well as the Entrepreneur Program. where all the waste generated inside the prison will be converted into compost or upcycled products, and all proceeds will go towards Himkara, a departmental social enterprise that makes furniture and bakery products and runs a restaurant.
With a dream to reach out across India, Waste Warriors was formed in September 2012 and is here to fight the war against waste in the Himalayan landscape. Through various strategic and creative interventions in Himachal Pradesh and eight other locations in Uttarakhand, Waste Warriors has established itself as a leader in community-led solid waste management in the Himalayas.
On November 22, 2022, Waste Warriors inaugurated the country’s first waste management model, which will be in a model prison. The Waste Under Arrest Model was launched at Lala Lajpat Rai Correctional Home, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.
The program also supports and spreads awareness among prisoners through waste management training and empowers prisoners to do more research in the waste sector. Which can become a livelihood opportunity in the future. This unique and necessary model will inspire others and can become a model for implementation across the country. Mrs. Satwant Atwal, ADGP Prisons and Correctional Services, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh has also assured that this initiative will soon take a bigger form and will be started in all other jails of Himachal Pradesh.
