Una, February 18: Jeevan Lal, a resident of Gondpur Banehra village in Una district, has set a remarkable example of self-reliance through fish farming. With hard work and government support under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), he started fish farming and earned a profit of ₹2.2 lakh in the first year. This year, he expects to earn over ₹7.6 lakh.
Jeevan Lal’s success is inspiring other farmers and youth. According to Fisheries Department Director Vivek Chandel, under the guidance of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, various schemes are being implemented to promote fish farming, including subsidies of 40-60% under PMMSY and 80% under the Mukhyamantri Carp Matsya Palan Yojana.
Innovation Led to Success
In 2023-24, Jeevan Lal started fish farming on 0.3450 hectares of land and received financial assistance of ₹1.71 lakh. Encouraged by his initial success, he expanded his venture by leasing neighboring ponds and now cultivates fish on 1.3817 hectares.
He adopted semi-intensive carp culture techniques to boost production and reduced costs by preparing fish feed from leftover pulses and soybean. His venture has created 72 additional workdays and provided stable employment to one individual.
Jeevan Lal’s success story highlights the growing potential of fish farming in Himachal Pradesh and serves as an inspiration for farmers seeking self-employment.
