Triumph Over Adversity: Inspiring Journeys of Himachal’s Divyang Women

Shimla, March 8: The success stories of Himachal Pradesh’s divyang (differently-abled) women are truly inspiring. Despite physical challenges, they have excelled in various fields, setting remarkable examples.
According to Prof. Ajay Srivastava, President of Umang Foundation, Sanjana Goyal, a wheelchair user due to muscular dystrophy, was honored with the National Award by President Pratibha Patil in 2004. She established “Manav Mandir,” Asia’s largest hospital and rehabilitation center for muscular dystrophy patients in Solan.
Chonjin Angmo from Kinnaur, who is completely visually impaired, received the National Award in 2024 and has set a world record by reaching the Siachen Glacier with a team of divyang individuals.
Priyanka Thakur became Himachal Pradesh’s first divyang woman judge, while singer Muskan Negi, a visually impaired artist and Youth Icon of the Election Commission of India, is an assistant professor at RKMV College, Shimla.
Nikita Chaudhary, the state’s first wheelchair-user MBBS student, is studying at Tanda Medical College. Pratibha Thakur, a visually impaired professor, teaches political science at Rajiv Gandhi Degree College, Shimla.
Several other divyang women, including PhD scholars, researchers, and educators, continue to inspire with their achievements. Prof. Srivastava emphasized the need to recognize their struggles and work towards removing societal barriers for divyang individuals.
