Thousands in Shimla Receive Bills with Fake IDs
2 min readDespite residents of Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, making payments for garbage collection, thousands of them are again receiving bills for waste management services. Several individuals have received bills under their names for vacant land. After receiving complaints, the Municipal Commissioner has initiated an investigation into the matter. A three-member inquiry committee, consisting of the Municipal Corporation’s Accountant, Health Officer, and Veterinary Public Health Officer, has been formed. This committee will investigate how residents are receiving fraudulent bills.
The issue may be related to software glitches. There have been instances where multiple fake IDs have been created under one person’s name. However, residents have been asked to bring their bill receipts to the Municipal Corporation office for verification. Once the receipts are shown, the Municipal Corporation is working to rectify these fake IDs from its records and software.
Additionally, some residents have raised concerns about the collection of wet and dry waste on alternate days. Wet waste often remains in homes, leading to unpleasant odors. A door-to-door garbage collection scheme involving approximately 60,000 participants is implemented by the Municipal Corporation. This scheme aims to provide monthly waste collection bills to residents. In 2019, the Municipal Corporation transitioned to online waste billing, providing each customer with a unique ID through which they receive bills. However, the software system has faced issues with the creation of multiple IDs for a single individual, resulting in the fraudulent billing situation. This issue has previously been reported, and the investigation committee has been formed to address and rectify these problems.
