Tension Escalates as HRTC and Locals Clash Over Installation of Nets in Mandi
2 min readMandi, August 27: A deep-seated dispute has arisen between the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) and local residents, sparking widespread discussions. The conflict stems from the decision of HRTC’s General Manager (GM) to place nets outside certain houses in Nela Ward, a move that has ignited controversy. The nets were installed without prior notice, following a tender process initiated by the corporation.
However, the nets have not been placed on pathways leading to residents’ homes. Locals allege that they are being threatened with nets being placed on these pathways as well. Anil Bahel, Ashok Sharma, Vijay Sharma, and Sonia, all residents of the area, shared that the pathway being closed by the corporation has historical significance, dating back centuries. The corporation claims unauthorized encroachments, while no individual has taken possession of any land owned by the corporation. The aggrieved individuals have lodged complaints with the GM of HRTC and the Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, urging them to address the issue promptly. The residents express that the nets outside their homes now make them feel like prisoners in their own dwellings.
In this context, the concerned individuals sought legal counsel from retired HPS officer and advocate B.R. Kaundal. B.R. Kaundal asserted that no one can be prohibited from using a pathway under the legal provisions. The actions of the corporation are unwarranted, and if necessary, a petition will be filed against them in the court of law. Additionally, when approached for comment, the GM of HRTC, Vinod Thakur, explained that unauthorized encroachments on corporation land prompted the placement of nets to protect the land. He clarified that pathways have not been restricted and will not be restricted. If individuals feel wronged, they can pursue legal remedies.
Amidst this dispute, tensions remain high, as the corporation’s action continues to be questioned by the locals. The debate revolves around the balance between land protection and the residents’ freedom to use traditional pathways. The outcome of this clash of perspectives is eagerly awaited by the community.
